Make a car cake by following these step-by-step instructions. Inspired by Lightning McQueen from the Disney Movie "Cars". Make your kid's birthday cake special. A cake topper shaped into a car is an easy do-it-yourself project that will delight anyone who sees it. I am not a trained cake decorator. I am a mom learning how to make cakes with fondant. Each year for each birthday I get excited of making a new cake challenge!!! There is something very special and satisfying about making your own cake. And it is great hearing your own kids comments about how wonderful it is. And they think mom makes the best cakes ever:))). It doesn't matter if it is not as a perfect as the store bought kind. Kids will have fun on their birthday anyway:)))
To make the car cake topper you will need:
#1 Fondant
#2 Rice Krispies
#4 Buttercream
Black, yellow and red colors
You can watch my video on you tube. This car cake topper took about 4 hrs to make. I shrink the video as much as possible:) I hope you can enjoy it.

Ingredients for fondant: (It's best to let it mature overnight in the fridge) Fondant Tutorial
16 ounces white mini-marshmallows (use a good quality brand)
2 pounds icing sugar (C&H Cane Powdered Sugar is the best results)
2 tbs water
1/2 cup Crisco shortening (you will be digging into it, so place in a bowl)
Cornstarch for dusting the table
Ingredients for Rice Krispies:
10 oz marshmallows
3 tbs butter
6 (12 oz) cups rice krispies
Melt butter and marshmallows. Pour melted marshmallows in the rice krispies. Mix well. Spray with oil 9in by 13in glass dish. Pour the mix in the dish to cool down.
Buttercream:
1 stick (113 grams) of butter at room temp
1/4 can sweetened condensed milk
Whip butter until fluffy add sweetened milk.
First make fondant, rice krispies and buttercream.
After rice krispies cool down. Start making the car shape.
I sliced a 9x5 inches piece. Then cut the edges to make it look like a car.
Then cut more shapes and add em to the car piece. My Video on you tube will help on some of the details.
Make 4 wheels. Then cut out the shapes in the car for em. I added some pieces of rice krispies under the car so it stands evenly on wheels.
Then when you are done with the shaping, spread buttercream all over. Transfer the car to the fridge.
Then I mixed fondant with the colors. Take it out of the fridge and heat in microwave. Grease your hands and the table generously with vegetable shortening. Use about 2/3 of the fondant recipe for red color, and about 2 inch ball for black color. Grey and yellow colors use about 1 inch ball for each. Sprinkle with corn starch if it sticks when you roll.
Now roll the black color to cover the wheels.
This wheel worked out well for wheels impression. It's totally optional:)
Cut a circle of red for the rims. I used my sons wheel for impression. It worked out well for me.
Stick en with water on top of black wheels. Return to the fridge.
Now I mixed red and yellow to make marble effect. I rolled and folded lots of times.
Then I cut out shapes. (My cutter did not work well for me, so some of the cutouts were crooked.) Then roll the rest of the colors and start adding fondant on the car.
First cover the car with red color and stick all the rest with water on.
Use a fondant tool to make line imprints. I added an extra red square on the roof.
Make a hood outline.
Add head lights and a mouth.
For eyes I used gray fondant covered with blue paint. Then black circles.
Stick em with water.
Add gray for the windows.
Then the back window.
Make outlines for windows with rolled red color.
Add red color line for mouth.
I used edible stickers for the name, then (way later when I was making the cake) I painted the name to match colors.
Add lights in the back.
Then color with food coloring red. Now it's ready for the cake.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial:))
